Never used a sauna before? Don’t sweat it. We’re here to help with our beginners guide to Löyly.
Saunas are an incredible tool to improve your health and wellbeing. Sauna usage can be beneficial for people of all activity levels. It is a low-impact therapy that can:
- Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
- Decrease neurodegenerative diseases
- Increases health span
- Mimic exercise-induced physiological responses
- Improve vascular compliance
- Improve resting blood pressure
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Improve muscle recovery
- Decrease inflammation
- Improve rest and sleep
- Improve skin and body tone
The list goes on.
For most, it's completely safe. However, people with uncontrolled high blood pressure and heart disease should check with their GP before using a sauna. When using the sauna or taking a cold plunge, remember to always listen to your body - it knows best!
BEFORE SAUNA
You’re getting ready to experience our sauna for the first time, what should you do?
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Make sure you have enough water for during and after your session. Always bring extra.
- Bring a buddy (it’s much funner!)
- Bring two towels: one to sit on and one to use after your session
- Have an open mind and zero expectations
DURING SAUNA
- Have a quick rinse before you jump in
- Pick a spot on the bench and sit on your towel
- Sit back, relax and enjoy the warmth
- Continue to sip water throughout your sauna
- We encourage everyone to connect and use the sauna as a space for conversation, but please also respect those who would prefer silence
- If everyone agrees, pour a ladle of water onto the hot rocks to give the sauna a quick boost of heat and steam
- Listen to your body, if you start to feel dizzy or light headed then slowly exit the sauna. Don’t overdo it.
POST SAUNA
- Let your body naturally cool for 5-10 minutes then jump in a cold shower
- Dry off and enjoy the post sauna glow!
- Ensure to keep drinking water to replace any lost fluids. Hot tip: we recommend a small amount of electrolytes post sauna to aid in rehydration.
There you have it! Sauna session, complete. For maximum benefits, finish your sauna with an ice bath. We’ll share more about taking the plunge in our next blog.
